UPDATE: The red light sauna from Ray's story now ships free, with a full year to try it at home.

You just watched “40,000 lightbulbs”

The red light sauna Ray put in his garage, and why it did what Carol's pills never did.

Everything from the video on one page: the spectral chart, the Finnish research, the sauna, and the 365-day trial.

A note from Ray

“I spent 31 years putting these bulbs in. I'm not here to sell you a pill or a miracle. I watched my wife get her nights back, and I wish someone had told us sooner. Everything I showed you is below.”

Ray, retired lighting engineer

Quick recap. Ray spent 31 years putting LEDs into hospitals, schools and homes. Then he looked at the spectral chart and realized the old bulbs gave off something the new ones don't: infrared. His wife Carol had been waking at 3 a.m. for years. Pills, melatonin and a drawer full of supplements didn't touch it.

What finally changed her nights was giving back two things modern life took away: the light and the heat. Before you scroll, does this sound like you?

Tap any that fit. Nobody sees this but you.

One or two is common. Keep reading.

That's exactly where Carol was.

All five. That deserves more than “you're just getting older.”

1 of 4 · The light

Your old bulbs were 90% infrared. Your LEDs: zero.

This is the chart I saw in that hospital basement in Omaha. Tap through each light source:

What you see Infrared · invisible flat line: zero 660850 400 nm7001,100 nm
~90%The old incandescent bulb. Almost everything it gave off was invisible infrared. That's why it felt warm.
0The LED that replaced it. Not less infrared. None. The line past 700 nm is completely flat.
~50%Sunlight. Roughly half of it is infrared, the light humans lived in every day for 200,000 years.
660 + 850The Caldera's panel. Red at 660 nm and near infrared at 850 nm, with 9 infrared heaters warming you at the same time.

Simplified illustration of typical spectra. Household LEDs are built for visible light; the Caldera's LEDs are built for red and near infrared.

Not “less.” Zero. The line is completely flat.

That invisible red and near infrared light is what humans bathed in for 200,000 years, from the sun, the fire and every bulb in grandma's house. Researchers have studied for decades how the mitochondria in your cells, your body's batteries, respond to exactly these wavelengths.

Then it was quietly taken out of the house:

How the infrared left the house

  1. 200,000 yearsSun by day, fire by night. Humans lived in red and infrared light.
  2. Grandma's houseEvery lamp is a warm incandescent glow, mostly infrared.
  3. Dec 2007Congress passes the law that starts phasing out the old bulbs.
  4. Summer 2012Ray swaps every bulb in his own house. Even the one over Carol's reading chair.
  5. Aug 1, 2023The final rule takes effect. The last everyday source of infrared in the American home is gone.

Today: the average American spends about 93% of their life indoors, behind windows coated to block infrared, under bulbs and screens that give off none. Source: EPA

Like a solar battery left in a closet. It doesn't break. It just slowly runs down. That was Carol. And it was Ray, too.

The Caldera's panel puts two of those wavelengths back: 660 nm red and 850 nm near infrared, from 180 LEDs you sit right in front of.

2 of 4 · The heat

“You Americans live your whole lives at 72 degrees.”

That's what Mikko told me. He grew up in Finland, where almost every home has a sauna. Then he showed me the research.

The Finnish sauna study from the video

2,300+

middle-aged men followed

~20 yrs

of follow-up

4 to 7

sessions a week vs. once

Men who used a sauna 4 to 7 times a week had markedly lower rates of heart problems, and a lower risk of dementia, than men who went once a week. Same country. Same winters. Same diet. The difference was the heat.

Kuopio Ischemic Heart Disease study (Laukkanen et al., JAMA Internal Medicine 2015; Age and Ageing 2017). Observational research on traditional Finnish saunas: an association, not proof, and not a study of the Caldera.

Heat switches on heat shock proteins, your body's cleanup crew. And warming your body in the evening can help you fall asleep faster, because the cool-down afterward is one of your brain's signals that it's time for deep sleep.

Now look at everything Carol tried. Tap each one:

Everything Carol triedTap each one · worked: 0 of 6

0 of 6. All six were missing the same two things. Keep reading.

Pills knocked her out. Melatonin nudged her clock. Supplements added fuel her cells couldn't burn. Every fix covered one piece. None gave back the light and the heat.

Then Mikko said the thing that changed everything. Switch them on one at a time:

Switch them on. Try each one alone first, the way most people do.

Red light alone. “It charges the battery, but nothing tells your body to rest and repair.” That's a clinic visit, or a panel on the wall.

Heat alone. “A regular sauna warms the air, but it gives you almost none of that red light.” Half the equation.

Both, at once. The light and the heat in the same twenty minutes. “You need the combination.” That's what the Caldera was built to do.

I cannot tell you how great this sauna is. I had been going to our gym for saunas and decided I’d like to have one at home for convenience- and I expected to use it more often. The temperature is great - up to 146 so far. I use the red light panel while the sauna heats up. Love the red light! What a great additional benefit. I monitor my heart rate and I do get to Zone 2 which is one of my goals. I have recommended this sauna to many friends!

4 of 4 · The math

A sleep study can cost $3,000. And you still wake up at 3 a.m.

Prescriptions every month. Coffee. Energy drinks. Supplements. When I priced out just the red light and the heat the way most people get them, this is what I found:

Do Ray's math
2
Red light clinic$75 a visit$7,800
Infrared studio$150 a month, plus the drive$1,800
Both, separatelylight at one place, heat at another$9,600
Relaxe Calderaboth, at home, one time$3,999
CalderaBoth, every night, for good. $3,999 once, or as low as $167/mo with Affirm. And 365 days to decide if it stays.

Clinic and studio: one year at the prices Ray found. Not counting the coffee, the supplements, or the gas. Financing subject to approval; 0% APR on 24 months for qualified buyers.

Frank, Ray's old foreman

“I've already wasted thousands on things that didn't work. What's one more try at the thing that actually might? Especially when I get a whole year to decide.”

He was right.

Ray gave Carol the same deal: “You get a full year to send it back if it doesn't work.” Her answer: “A year? That's more than my doctor ever gave me.”

Three weeks later Ray found her on the living room floor, building a block tower with their granddaughter. “I slept through the night, Ray. I woke up before the alarm. I didn't get younger. I just got back what I was missing.”

I am 82 years old with shoulder aches and leg pain. I live alone and decided to install it by myself. [...] With all the heaters on the unit achieved a temperature of 136 f in about 30 minutes. [...] After a week of treatment my shoulder and leg pains are much reduced.

Your questions, answered

Will it help me sleep?

Most owners use it as their evening wind down: twenty minutes of red light and heat, a cool shower, then bed. You get 365 nights to see what it does for yours.

Can I use the light and the heat at the same time?

Yes. That's the point of the Caldera. The red light panel and the 9 infrared heaters run together, so one 20 minute session gives you both.

How hot does it get?

64 to 149°F, with a timer from 0 to 90 minutes. Twenty minutes is a comfortable place to start. New to heat? Start shorter and lower.

How long does it take to heat up?

About 10 to 15 minutes. A lot of owners turn on the red light panel while it warms up.

Is it low EMF?

Yes. The Caldera uses low EMF carbon heaters and complies with standard household EMF levels.

What does it cost to run?

It runs off a regular wall outlet and draws about what a space heater does. On most electric bills, a nightly session costs a fraction of one clinic visit a month.

How hard is assembly?

It arrives flat-packed in labeled boxes that fit through a normal doorway. Two people, about 45 minutes. Plenty of owners, including an 82 year old reviewer, do it alone.

Will it fit in my house?

The one person is 36 x 43 inches and 75 inches tall. The one and two person run on a standard 120V outlet. The three person needs a 240V circuit.

What if I don't love it?

You get 365 days. If it's not for you, we schedule a pickup from your home and refund you in full, less return shipping.

Who should check with a doctor first?

Anyone who is pregnant, has a heart condition or low blood pressure, has trouble with heat, or takes medication that affects it. Stay hydrated, and get out if you feel dizzy.

Research. The Finnish sauna findings come from the observational Kuopio Ischemic Heart Disease study of traditional saunas (Laukkanen et al., JAMA Internal Medicine, 2015; Age and Ageing, 2017). The indoor time figure is from the EPA. Research on red and near infrared light, infrared heat and sleep refers to those topics in general, not to the Relaxe Caldera. Safety. The Relaxe Caldera is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Talk to your doctor before using a sauna if you are pregnant, have a heart condition or low blood pressure, or take medication that affects heat tolerance.
